August is here and we’re halfway through summer.
I just got back from New York and the Romance Writers of America (RWA) Conference. It was fun.
We stayed at a hotel on Times Square.
On Sunday, before conference started, we went to the Cher show. I’m not a Cher fan. I enjoyed the music of Sonny and Cher and of Cher. But I thought she was a little over the top. The show was great and traced Cher’s life from childhood to her recent life. It showed the challenges she faced and how Sonny took advantage of her. It showed how she met the challenges over the years and survived. The music was awesome. It was fast paced and kept you alert throughout the performance. And now I admire Cher.
Tuesday, we had an all-day workshop at the FBI. Lots of good information for writing mystery, suspense and even romance. In the morning, after passing through their security, we learned about The Counterintelligence Program and Counter-terrorism/Domestic Terrorism with SABT’s (Special Agent Bomb Technician’s).
We had a catered lunch, courtesy of Kiss of Death, a chapter of RWA as we weren’t allowed to leave the building. In the afternoon it was two members of the Violent Crimes squad in New York, one male, one female. They had some great stories and had been partners for about seven years. They slipped in that they are ow married (there’s the romance). After that we learned about the Criminal Justice Information Service, and how the Identity History Summary Checks system works. It was very interesting.
I learned that fingerprints are not all equal. The pinky makes the worst fingerprint and the thumb is next. There is also the Registry for Individuals with Special concerns (RISC). Police carry a mobile finger printer and can identify an individual in seconds.
Did you know they also have footprints, ear prints and facial recognition? And they’re working on iris recognition.
Working on my second half of the year goals. Wow! We’re already half-way through the year.
I’m doing my blog with lots of great authors and some interesting topics. Click on my blog and check out my blog site. And if you’d like to be a guest send me an email or post on my blog.
I’m still working on two books at the same time, The Foundation series and the stand alone, Death Southern Style. I’m spending more time on Liability Wife. I would like to have it complete by mid-September. We’ll see.
Here’s another short draft, excerpt from the second book of The Foundation series, Liability Wife Lydia’s story. It’s the next excerpt from the one posted last month. Hopefully you’ve read Book one of The Foundation series, The Fourth Victim Sara’s Story. If not and you’d like to check it out, there are a couple of buy links below – and you can also win Amazon gift cards.
Sara, Lydia, Maggie and Diane sat in Carly’s office debriefing after their latest assignment.
“I know we don’t save men. But if we know someone is in danger isn’t there some way someone else can get a message to them? If I hear Che Guevarra has been killed, I’m going to feel a little guilty that I might have been able to do something to prevent it.” Lydia leaned forward in her chair.
Carly looked at the four women. They all had the same pleading look on their faces. Being in charge was not easy and some decisions were harder than others. A sigh escaped between her lips.
Julie sat in the back of the room with a copy of the report. Carly looked back at her.
Julie shrugged.
"It's not usual, but I'll see what we can do to pass a message on. Give me the name and the message. I’ll see what I can do, but no promises and we won’t discuss it again.” Carly said.
Four heads bobbled in unison.
“Thank you.” Maggie responded.
“Thanks.” Sara added.
“Okay, your assignment was successful. I’ve got the written report. Is there anything else?”
The women looked at each other and shook their heads.
“Good, go take a break until your next assignment. Good job, ladies.”
The four women left the room. Maggie closed the door behind her.
Julie stood up.
“You’re no help.” Carly said.
“I’m sorry. I can see why they asked, and I sort of agree with them. We’re not going to send a team in to save the man, but if there is a way to even try to get him a message…”
“Yeah, I know. I feel the same way, but we have enough work saving women. I’ll make a couple of calls, that’s it.”
“Fair enough,” Julie responded
After Julie left the room Carly picked up the phone and punched in a number. It was a good excuse to talk to him and he might have a suggestion. If they killed Che that would pretty much kill the revolution. Another sigh floated into the room. “Link? Could you do me favor?”
“Hmm and what do I get in exchange?”
“Not a damn thing. I’ll pay you for it.”
“Now where’s the fun in that, babe?”
“Don’t babe me. I have a problem. Do you have any South American contacts?"
“I might.”
This time Carly’s sigh shot through the phone lines. “Look, this is a professional call. I need someone with contacts in South America. I need to find a way to get a message to someone. If you can’t help me, I’ll find someone who can.”
A pause lasting several seconds followed. “Okay, I do have some contacts. What do you want?”
“I need to get word to a Che Guevarra, in Peru. His life is in danger. I have a contact name.”
“Che Guevarra? Isn’t that a little off your usual work?”
“Never mind that, can you reach him?”
“Yeah, if you have a contact, I can probably get a message to him.”
“I’ll email you the contact.”
“Do you want me to let you know if I get the message through?”
“No, it’s okay, just do your best.” Carly hung up the phone.
Phoenix let out a yip from his dog bed.
“Forget it. Link’s not coming back. Go to sleep. I have work to do.”
Carly turned her attention to CCB Enterprises and their latest bid for a government contract.
A few hours later Link emailed her. Carly reread his message several times. This was becoming more of a challenge than she’d anticipated. If Link was right, and she trusted him, then there was a government cover-up. It could affect the work Dr. Miguay had been doing. It might not be rescuing women, but it did look like something she and The Foundation needed to protect. Damn it.
She called Sara to pass on a message to Dr. Miguay before she typed furiously on her computer.
